幻妄俱从嗜欲生,天堂地狱本虚名。
茫茫我自闲来去,一起机心有不平。
注:○嗜欲:贪欲也。《荀子·性恶》:“妻子具而孝衰于亲,嗜欲得而信衰于友,爵禄盈而忠衰于君。”○天堂地狱:《宋书·夷蛮传·天竺婆黎国》:“叙地狱则民惧其罪,敷天堂则物欢其福。”○机心:机巧之心。《庄子·天地》:“吾闻之吾师,有机械者必有机事,有机事者必有机心。机心存于胸中,则纯白不备。”成玄英疏:“有机动之务者,必有机变之心。”○原文云:“天堂者,欲念之虚足也。地狱者,火焚之心魂投诸暗地之幻影也。方从彼出,旋复将逝。”盖天堂地狱所以不齐者,生人之有嗜欲也。其出与逝,浮游乘化之事,一起机心,乃有不平也。故译文如是言也。
Heav'n but the Vision of fulfill'd Desire,
And Hell the Shadow from a Soul on fire,
Cast on the Darkness into which Ourselves,
So late emerged from, shall so soon expire.

一点孤明阳燧火,是谁取向正中悬?
注:○马骑灯:走马灯也。金盈之 《醉翁谈录·京城风俗记·正月》:“上元,自月初开东华门为镫字……又有镫毬、镫槊、绢镫笼、日月镫、诗牌绢镫、镜镫、字镫、马骑镫。”范成大 《上元纪吴中节物俳谐体三十二韵》“映光鱼隐现,转影骑纵横。”原注:“马骑灯。”○大千:大千世界之省也。道恒 《释驳论》:“故神晖一震,则感动大千。”○阳燧:《周礼·秋官·司烜氏》:“司烜氏掌以夫遂取明火于日,以鉴。”郑玄 注:“夫遂,阳遂也。”贾公彦疏:“以其日者,太阳之精,取火于日,故名阳遂。”原文云:“彼灯之光自阳精来,持灯者夜半挑之。”或言月也。此以阳燧火译之,更肖灯也。

吾人为子随翻覆,覆尽挥将笥里行。
注:○棋枰:棋局也。司空图 《丁巳元日》诗:“移居荒药圃,耗志在棋枰。”○翻覆:《文选·孔稚圭北山移文》:“岂期终始参差,苍黄翻覆。”吕延济注:“翻覆,不定也。”此言棋子之去取也。○笥:棋笥也。
But helpless Pieces of the Game He plays
Upon this Chequer-board of Nights and Days;
Hither and thither moves, and checks, and slays,
And one by one back in the Closet lays.

玉勒金鞍笑打毬,一杆击处看星流。
偶然堕地真游戏,怨甚君身不自由?
注:○玉勒二句:王直《端午日观打球》:“玉勒千金马,雕文七宝球。鞚飞惊电掣,杖奋觉星流。”○游戏:嬉戏也。《韩非子·难三》:“管仲之所谓‘言室满室,言堂满堂’者,非特谓游戏饮食之言也,必谓大物也。”原文云:“彼知一切也。彼知之!彼知之!”而未言所知,此但以游戏译之耳。○自由:任由自身也。《古诗为焦仲卿妻作》:“吾意久怀忿,汝岂得自由?”
The Ball no question makes of Ayes and Noes,
But Here or There as strikes the Player goes;
And He that toss'd you down into the Field,

挥毫司命簿中书,夭寿无情尽在予。
好学积仁庸得易?哀陈泣诉莫能纾。
注:○司命:掌生死之神。《庄子·至乐》:“吾使司命复生子形,为子骨肉肌肤。”司命簿即生死簿也。○夭寿句:《楚辞·大司命》:“纷总总兮九州,何寿夭兮在予。”○好学:《论语·公冶长》:“敏而好学,不耻下问,是以谓之文也。”此译智也。积仁:《史记·伯夷列传》:“若伯夷、叔齐,可谓善人者非邪?积仁絜行如此而饿死!”此译虔也。
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.

上者苍苍是一穹,茫然下覆作樊笼。
我来生死因休问,天自回旋势所同。
注:○上者二句:《乐府诗集·杂歌谣辞·敕勒歌》:“天似穹庐,笼盖四野。”穹,隆起貌,故以译覆碗。○我来二句:原文云:“毋举手呼其助也,彼之无能一如吾汝。”译文益以苍茫之致耳。
And that inverted Bowl they call the Sky,
Whereunder crawling coop'd we live and die,
Lift not your hands to It for help——for It
As impotently moves as you or I.

黄土抟成最后人,便教代代作浮尘。
来从何处归何处,底事临归恨不申?
注:○原文云:“太初之陶泥抟成末世之人形,末世之获也即在此太初之种。既书于开辟之朝,必诵于末世之晨。”译文“底事临归恨不申”一句衍其感慨也。
With Earth's first Clay They did the Last Man knead,
And there of the Last Harvest sow'd the Seed:
And the first Morning of Creation wrote
What the Last Dawn of Reckoning shall read.

今朝既付饮疏狂,明日宁论意短长?
世事但知前已定,去来莫问且挥觞。
注:○疏狂:不受拘束也。白居易 《代书诗寄微之》:“疏狂属年少。”○意短长:陶渊明《九日閒居诗》:“世短意恒多,斯人乐久生。”○前已定:译原文“昨日之预也”。○挥觞:陶潜《咏二疏》:“挥觞道平素。”
YESTERDAY This Day's Madness did prepare;
TO-MORROW'S Silence, Triumph, or Despair:
Drink! for you know not whence you came, nor why:
Drink! for you know not why you go, nor where.

爰命羲和御六龙,旄头高揭岁星从。
茫茫驰过黄尘去,留得红云下罩侬。
注:○羲和:《楚辞·离骚》:“吾令羲和弭节兮,望崦嵫而勿迫。”王逸注:“羲和,日御也。”《初学记》卷一引《淮南子·天文训》:“爰止羲和,爰息六螭,是谓悬车。”原注:“日乘车,驾以六龙,羲和御之。”译原文之天马,即日也。○旄头:昴宿也。《汉书·天文志》:“昴曰旄头,胡星也,为白衣会。”即原文之Parwin也。岁星:木星也。盖木星十二年行一周天,分天为十二次。年经一次,以其所在星次纪年,称岁星也。《史记·天官书》:“察日月之行,以揆岁星顺逆。”即原文之Mushtari也。○茫茫二句:原文云:“掷诸吾尘与魂之定命。”此占星家语,谓日之所值,吾人命有所定焉。而吾人以尘为躯,以魂为主也。译文以“黄尘”示吾人,以“红云”示定命也。
I tell you this—When, started from the Goal,
Over the flaming shoulders of the Foal
Of Heav'n, Parwin and Mushtari they flung,
In my predestined Plot of Dust and Soul.

葡萄藤蔓结吾生,举酒问谁青眼横?
君自苦行休笑我,浊醪妙理正难明。
注:○青眼横:黄庭坚《登快阁》:“青眼聊因美酒横。”○浊醪妙理:杜甫《晦日寻崔戢李封》:“浊醪有妙理,庶用慰沈浮。”原文云:“吾以此贱质为键,得启其户。”因以“浊醪妙理”译其所喻之意也。
The Vine had struck a fibre: which about
If clings my Being——let the Dervish flout;
Of my Base metal may be filed a Key
That shall unlock the Door he howls without.

贪尽春风酒色天,莫因用逸畏前贤。
名添两庑吾何用,输与旗亭斗十千。
注:○春风酒色天:唐孙华《王南湖纳燕姬戏赠四绝句》其二:“为郎低唱斟金斝,消受春风酒色天。”○用逸:《尚书·酒诰》:“尔乃自介用逸。”○两庑:文庙中先贤从祀处。《明史·礼志四》:“两庑从祀……凡九十一人。”○旗亭斗十千:贺铸《小梅花》:“作雷颠,不论钱,谁问旗亭美酒斗十千?”○原文云:“吾知之,彼真火也,或燃爱欲,或致责怒。但使吾能于酒肆中一瞥见,即胜逡巡于庙堂中也。”译文组织吾国故实达其意也。
And this I know: whether the one True Light
Kindle to Love, or Wrath-consume me quite,

黄土抟人魂魄生,正多哀乐世间情。
一从理欲成分隔,直到今朝恨不平。
注:○理欲:天理人欲之省也。《礼记·乐记》:“人化物也者,灭天理而穷人欲者也。”《宋史·陈宓传》:“宓天性刚毅,通道尤笃,尝为《朱墨铭》,谓朱属阳,墨属阴,以验理欲分寸之多寡。”○原文云:“自不仁之虚无所出之血肉,宁是能感之有乎?尚能怨此锢哀乐之节耶?不中者其必受永世之罚也!”译文不用此反语,而正言之也。
What! out of senseless Nothing to provoke
A conscious Something to resent the yoke
Of unpermitted Pleasure, under pain
Of Everlasting Penalties, if broke!

娲皇泥土予吾人,还以精金铸圣身。
此事凭谁相约束?世间妄意总非真。
注:○原文云:“彼付者泥滓也,而索者精金也。为彼所造者何无奈耶!吾人固未尝贷也,何偿为?此贸易之最堪悲者哉!”译文缓其激切,不以渎圣也。
What! from his helpless Creature be repaid
Pure Gold for what he lent him dross-allay'd—
Sue for a Debt he never did contract,
And cannot answer——Oh the sorry trade!

人生漂荡苦消魂,处处相逢有酒樽。
我到樽前沉湎尽,天如罪我是奇冤。
注:○沉湎:《尚书•胤征》:“羲和湎淫。”孔传:“沉湎于酒。”○原文云:“吾独行彷徨,途中非尽汝所布陷人之惑耶?汝岂使我入彀中,复以堕落罪我耶?”盖陷人之惑,即酒也。
Oh Thou, who didst with pitfall and with gin
Beset the Road I was to wander in,
Thou wilt not with Predestined Evil round
Enmesh, and then impute my Fall to Sin!

七言绝句
抟土縆泥意已差,力穷竟未拔其蛇。
人神从此交相恕,更以何心判正邪?
注:○力穷句:李商隐《咏史》:“力穷难拔蜀山蛇。”○交相:互相也。《诗·小雅·角弓》:“不令兄弟,交相为瘉。”孔颖达疏:“其不善之人于兄弟则无恩义,唯交更相诟病而已。”○人神句:原文云:“汝以诸罪黥人之面,汝既予赦,又得赦也!”译文之后句衍原文之前句也。○余旧译云:“何事人身用土浆?何缘蛇迹在仙乡?竟知善恶由谁作?帝力人心漫较量。”嫌于第二句无吾国故实,故用义山诗字面改译之。
Oh Thou, who Man of baser Earth didst make,
And ev'n with Paradise devise the Snake:
For all the Sin wherewith the Face of Man
Is blacken'd—Man's forgiveness give—and take!

只待消除禁食天,望中红日尚西悬。
陶家坊肆重行到,瓮缶纷纷拥我前。
注:下九首为《瓮歌行》 ○瓮歌行:原文KUZA-NAMA(Pot-book)之译。瓮,陶瓶也。此九首假为诸瓮缶之言。○禁食天:原文Ramazán之译,伊斯兰历第九月,斋月也。后即Shawwal,开斋节始矣。此斋月之末日也,日尽则斋月终也。
As under cover of departing Day
Slunk hunger-stricken Ramazán away,
Once more within the Potter's house alone
I stood, surrounded by the Shapes of Clay.

红泥紫釉自斑斓,巨瓮长瓶各就班。
或挂壁间歌不止,或陈地上态偏闲。
注:○红泥句:原文但言式样、大小,未言色采,盖非彩陶也。此红泥紫釉,但见其烧制火候之异,亦言式样,非言色采也。○就班:居其当位也。陆机《文赋》:“然后选义按部,考辞就班。”
Shapes of all Sorts and Sizes, great and small,
That stood along the floor and by the wall;
And some loquacious Vessels were; and some
Listen'd perhaps, but never talk'd at all.

或言身本在泥陶,成毁由人信手操。
今是壶樽明是土,若他生死岂徒劳?
注:○若君句:原文但言徒劳,不譬人之生死。而壶之成毁,实即人之生死也,故作是译。
Said one among them—"Surely not in vain
"My substance of the common Earth was ta'en
"And to this Figure moulded, to be broke,
"Or trampled back to shapeless Earth again."

或言否否请深思,大匠焉能似此嬉!
见说儿童惜杯盏,孰云君子败尊彝?
注:○大匠:木工之精诣者。《老子》:“夫代司杀者杀,是谓代大匠斲。夫代大匠斲者,稀有不伤其手矣。”此指陶工,而又譬夫造物者也。○尊彝:礼器也。《周礼·春官·司尊彝》:“司尊彝,掌六尊六彝之位。”《国语·周语中》:“出其尊彝,陈其俎豆。”韦昭注:“尊、彝皆受酒之器也。”○原文云:“其次者曰:虽狡童不毁其杯盏,盖尝欣然以之饮也。即盛怒下,彼岂必轻毁我辈哉!”译文“君子败尊彝”云云,旁衍之慨叹耳。
Then said a Second——"Ne'er a peevish Boy
Would break the Bowl from which he drank in joy;
And He that with his hand the Vessel made
Will surely not in after Wrath destroy."

七言绝句
时则诸壶默不言,忽闻窳器苦鸣冤:“人皆笑我形枯槁,失手谁于大匠论”?
注:○窳:恶也。《史记·五帝纪》:“器不苦窳。”
After a momentary silence spake
Some Vessel of a more ungainly Make;
"They sneer at me for leaning all awry:
What! did the Hand then of the Potter shake?"
